CIRCUS MEETS CABARET: Flying Fruit Flies Make Historic Spiegeltent Debut

In a first-ever collaboration that promises to merge youthful dynamism with vintage charm, Australia's National Youth Circus, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, is set to make its debut appearance at The Famous Spiegeltent this November. The historic venue, renowned for its ornate mirrors and stained glass, will host the troupe's new production Live and Famous at Sydney's Carriageworks.

The production, helmed by Artistic Director Anni Davey, marks a significant milestone for the "Fruities." Since their humble beginnings as a local circus project in Albury-Wodonga in 1979, the company has evolved into one of the world's leading youth performing arts organisations, earning international acclaim for their distinctive blend of acrobatic prowess and infectious enthusiasm.

Live and Famous will showcase eight young performers in what Davey describes as a "magical cabaret cocktail."  The intimate setting of the Spiegeltent – traditionally a venue associated with adult cabaret and variety shows – presents an intriguing new context for the youth circus company's characteristic aerial acts and acrobatics.

The production appears to be strategically positioned to appeal to both traditional circus enthusiasts and those drawn to contemporary performance art. While maintaining the company's family-friendly approach, the cabaret-style presentation suggests a more sophisticated theatrical experience than typical youth circus shows.

The cast features emerging talents Abigail Sandral, Arabella Renwick, Chelsea Quail, Hudson White, Khalan Walsh-Young, Lucia Richardson, Rachel Phillips, and Tal Shemesh. They are working under the guidance of Associate Director Ben Lewis, with costumes by April Dawson complementing the Spiegeltent's lavish aesthetic.

This Sydney season represents more than just another tour date for the Flying Fruit Fly Circus. It symbolises the company's continued evolution from regional circus school to national cultural institution. Over four decades, they've maintained their commitment to demonstrating the capabilities of young performers while consistently pushing artistic boundaries.

The marriage of youth circus with the historic Spiegeltent venue – a century-old travelling dance hall that has hosted countless legendary performers – creates an intriguing experience. It's a bold programming choice that positions these young artists within a rich theatrical tradition while allowing them to bring their contemporary energy to this classic space.

Live and Famous runs for a limited season from November 23 to December 1, 2024, at Carriageworks. Given the Spiegeltent's intimate capacity and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus's track record of sold-out performances, early bookings are advisable for this unique cultural synthesis.
