ECHOES OF PRIDE: Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir

The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir (SGLC) is set to deliver a powerful musical celebration of diversity and resilience with their upcoming performance, Echoes of Pride, on Saturday, October 26, at Petersham Town Hall.

This concert promises to be a journey through the LGBTQIA+ community's history, struggles, and triumphs, as reflected in a carefully selected repertoire spanning over a decade of the choir's performances. The program will feature a mix of popular anthems and commissioned works, each chosen to resonate with themes of love, acceptance, and hope.

Adam Majsay, Music Director of SGLC, emphasises the personal nature of the performance: "With popular queer anthems and commissioned works inspired by the personal experiences of the SGLC members, you'll experience the beauty of our voices united in harmony, as we celebrate the strength and vibrancy of our community."

The setlist includes well-known songs such as I'm Still Standing and Over The Rainbow, which have become anthems within the LGBTQIA+ community. These familiar tunes will be interspersed with original compositions, creating a diverse musical landscape that reflects the multifaceted nature of the community it represents.

SGLC has been an integral part of Sydney's LGBTQIA+ community for over three decades, having maintained a visible and vocal presence since its formation in 1991. The choir's inclusive ethos is evident in its non-auditioned policy, welcoming members regardless of their sexual identity or musical experience. This approach has allowed the SGLC to become a powerful symbol of diversity and inclusion within Sydney's cultural landscape.

The choice of Petersham Town Hall as the venue for Echoes of Pride is significant. This historic building, with its art deco features and community focus, provides an appropriate backdrop for a performance that bridges past and present, celebrating progress while acknowledging ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

Echoes of Pride comes at a time when issues of diversity and inclusion continue to be at the forefront of public discourse. Through music, SGLC aims to contribute to this ongoing conversation, using the universal language of song to promote understanding and acceptance.

For those interested in experiencing this celebration of pride and unity through music, Echoes of Pride offers an opportunity to hear the collective voice of Sydney's LGBTQIA+ community. It's a powerful symphony of pride, resilience, and hope.

This performance not only showcases the musical talents of SGLC but also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of Sydney's LGBTQIA+ community. Through their voices, SGLC continues to play a vital role in promoting visibility, fostering inclusion, and celebrating diversity in the city's rich cultural tapestry.
