PREVIEW: Inner-City Romance Takes Flight in New Sydney Production

Sydney's Space Jump Theatre Company presents Two Hearts a contemporary work by Australian playwright Laura Lethlean, exploring the complexities of modern relationships through a poetic lens. The production opens March 18 at Marrickville's Flight Path Theatre.

Set during a recurring party in an inner-city townhouse, the play centres on an unnamed couple, portrayed by Danette Potgieter and Yarno Rohling, whose relationship evolves under the watchful eye of a mysterious presence played by Lisa Hanssens. This ethereal observer serves as both witness and catalyst, compelling the couple to confront their shared history and uncertain future.

Director Kirsty Semaan, fresh from her role as Assistant Director on Flight Path Theatre's recent production of Blood Wedding, brings her distinctive visual approach to this intimate piece. Her recent works, including Woyzeck and A Mouth Full of Birds, have established her reputation for crafting emotionally resonant theatre.

The creative team features set design by Jason Lowe, complemented by Jasmin Borsovsky's lighting, which aims to heighten the production's exploration of romantic connection. Sound designer Charlotte Leamon and intimacy director Diana Alvarado round out the key creative roles, suggesting careful attention to both the atmospheric and physical aspects of the performance.

The production continues Space Jump's mission of reviving contemporary works they believe deserve renewed attention. It joins a growing trend of Australian theatre examining millennial relationships through experimental frameworks, with Lethlean's script offering a particularly poetic take on the subject.

Recent years have seen Space Jump establish itself as a company focused on championing contemporary Australian playwrights, with a particular emphasis on female voices. This production appears to align with that trajectory, while also marking their first major offering for 2025.

Two Hearts runs from March 18-29 at Flight Path Theatre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville.
